✦ Synopsis

In this paper the main techniques (microscopy observations, molecular weight cut-off determinations, porosity measurements) for characterizing ultrafiltration membranes are critically reviewed and discussed . Particular attention is devoted to the problem of evaluating the porosity of the membrane skin layer .

Porosity results obtained by testing some commercial ultrafiltration membranes with an automatic instrument based on the combined bubble pressure and solvent permeability method are reported .

Surface-charge-mosaic-modified ultrafiltration membranes with charged domains of various sizes (500, 100, or 50 mm) were prepared by two-step laser-induced surface graft polymerization using a striped photomask. First, the surface of an ultrafiltration membrane was treated with 4-vinylpyridine after

Several membranes have been tested in a test loop especially built in order to achieve well-defined flow conditions at the membrane surface. A test solution of dextran was ultrafiltrated at 0.5 MPa and 25Β°C at five circulation velocities from 5 m/s to 1 m/s. This corresponds to Reynolds numbers of 2

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) were used to investigate the surface of ultraÐltration membranes with pore sizes of ¿10 nm. A variety of poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylamide) polymers of different compositions were synthesized by free radical copolymerization. Thin films were cast from polymer solutions, and coagulated into ultrafiltration membranes. The effect of preparative parameters on membrane gel structure was investig
