British society'. But the conservatives ignore it altogether, while the Labour party prefers to concentrate on equality of opportunity (not of outcome) and on moving people from welfare to work. As long as the have-nots (who have fallen furthest behind during nearly two decades of laissez-faire market-orientated economic policy) remain quiescent, the haves will doubtless collude to keep equality o the agenda. No, one of the grounds for any optimism I may feel lies in the potential impact of this book (and other similar work) on the development of health public policy.
