Abstract
The human glioma cell line Uβ251 MG, with a wellβcharacterized defect in growth control, was sensitive to the antiproliferative effects of human (fibroblast) interferon (IFN). IFN inhibited exponentially growing cells by increasing the number of cells in the S stage of the cell cycle. At the same time the number of cells in G~0~/G~1~ diminished. The rate of thymidine incorporation was decreased during the first cell cycle, with no prolongation of S. However, in synchronized cultures, the wave of cells with a Sβphase content did not decrease over a time period several hours longer than the length of S measured by pulse labelling. Thus we conclude that, at a sufficient dose, the cells were unable to accomplish cell division as they prematurely stopped synthesizing DNA.

TRAIL/Apo-2L, a novel cytokine, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family and serves as an extracellular signal triggering apoptosis. TRAIL/Apo-2L is capable of killing various transformed cells but not unstimulated primary T cells. In this study, five human glioma cells (U87, U118, U178
The cellular uptake and retention of a new cholesteryl carborane ester compound, cholesteryl 1,12-dicarba-closo-dodecaboranel-carboxylate (BCH), by two human glioma cell lines, glioblastoma multiforme SF-763 and SF-767, was evaluated. BCH, which is an extremely hydrophobic compound, was formulated i
p21 WAF1/CIP1 is a downstream mediator of p53 and mediates growth arrest by inhibiting the action of G 1 cyclin-dependent kinases. Since cellular differentiation is frequently characterized by G 1 arrest, we examined whether p21 WAF1/CIP1 overexpression would induce growth suppression and differenti
