## Abstract Ascorbic acid in aqueous solution in the presence of molecular oxygen causes a degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). This degradation can be completely suppressed by the addition of catalase or of peroxidase. It is concluded that the degradation of the DNA is due to the formation
