N-Formylmaleamic acid, a probable intermediate in the bacterial metabolism of nicotinic acid, has been synthesized by photoisomerization of its trans isomer, N-formylfumaramic acid. The compound previously reported to be N-formylmaleamic acid has been shown to be N-formylfumaramic acid.

Bacterial degradation of p-methoxybenzoi

A ceIl-fi'ee system from a Pseudomonas sp., strain P~3, catalysed the oxidative demethylation, hydroxylation and subsequent ring cleavage of p-methoxybenzoate. Demethylation, to yield p-hydroxybenzoate, involved absorption of 1.0 mole of oxygen/mole of p-methoxybenzoate, and required reduced pyridin
