Characteristics of the electronic excited states of transition-metal complexes are reviewed, Attention is focussed on the experimental means of ~dentifying the orbital natures ef the emitting manifolds. Two new criteria for distinguishing among excited triplet terms are enunciated: (a) the profile of the phosphorescence lifetime vs. the temperature in the range 77-4 K, and (b) the functional dependence of the phosphorescence decay rate on an external

Luminescence Lifetimes of several complex ions at 77% and 4.2'K arc reported. The Lifetimes are shortened in a magnetic field. The results indicate that emission occurs from scvera! states in Boltzmann equilibrium, at least one of which possesses a magnetic moment.
