Excitation spectra, photoemission spectra, and phosphorescence decay times were measured on the title compound. Results are consistent with an Ir( I) -Au (I) orbital promotion leading to a lowest 'A, state and a corresponding low-lying 'A, term that splits into (B,, B,)Bnd A2 states by spin-orbit coupling in approximate Czv symmetry. Analysis of T-dependent decay times and emission polarization results indicates that the B,, Bz states are nearly degenerate and lie n. 90 cm-' above the Az state that is formally forbidden in Czv. There is also quadratic dependence of the decay rate of the Az state on applied magnetic-field strength.
