โฆ Synopsis
Some theorists of argumentation seem to believe that we should consider the purpose of argumentation to be persuasion. Although persuasion is a purpose of argumentation on some occasions, we must recognize that argumentation can and does have another and equally important purpose, namely inquiry. One reason why this point is important is that argumentation for purposes of inquiry often takes a different form from argumentation for persuasion. This is illustrated by considering how objections are treated in the two cases. This point is also important because the failure to recognize it can distort our understanding of much intellectual activity and because it has various pedagogical consequences.
