Abstract
Pertinent issues of collagen antigenicity and immunogenicity are concisely reviewed as they relate to the design and application of biomedical devices. A brief discussion of the fundamental concepts of collagen immunochemistry is presented, with a subsequent review of documented clinical responses to devices containing reconstituted soluble or solubilized collagen. The significance of atelocollagen, concerns regarding collagenβinduced autoimmunity, and other relevant topics are also addressed in the context of current understanding of the human immune response to collagen. The entrapment of beta-galactosidase (Escherichia coli) in PLA and PLGA microspheres using a double emulsion technique resulted to significant reduction of protein antigenicity. The extent of antigenicity loss depended on the conditions of microsphere preparation. Most of antigenicity loss occurred
Porcine intestinal collagen (ICL), derived from processed small intestine, is used as a part of a remodelable bilaminate biosynthetic vascular prosthesis. The process for the production of ICL involves mechanical cleaning of noncrosslinked porcine intestine (NC-ICL), disinfection with peracetic acid
