โฆ Synopsis
The concentration dependence of vibrational linewidths in isotopic mixtures has been utilized routinely to ascertain the role of resonant energy transfer on vibrational relaxation in liquids. In a Raman study of the vr modes in CHaCla/CDaCla solutions, it was found that the C-H stretching linewidth actually increases upon isotope dilution. This result, predicted theoretically but never heretofore observed, contains significant ramifications concerning the interpretation of isotapic dilution studies in general.
