✦ Synopsis

The basic phenomena of fluorescence and fluorescence anisotropy decay (FAD) are b i e f l y presented. The FAD technique i s f i r s t applied t o polytutadiene labelled with anthracene in the middle of the chain and embedded i n a mtrix of unlabelled p o l y btadiene; experiments are performed in the temperature range -5OOC-+ 8OOC. It i s shown t h a t the experimntal data can be very well accounted for using the orientation autocorrelation function proposed by Hall and Helfand (6) for polymer chains. Studies performed on 9,lO-diallglanthracene probes (with various lengths of t h e

The time dependence of the anisotropy of all-trans-decatetraene in paraffin oil solution is analyzed in terms of a prolate ellipsoid of revolution with the electronic transition dipole oriented at an angle with respect to the ellipsoidal long axis. Data obtained at live temperatures from 10 to -5Β°C
