An ion-paired high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of aldosine, which is derived from the aldol crosslink of both elastin and collagen, is described. Aldosine was determined as the pyridine derivative 6 -(3-pyridyl) piperidine-2-carboxylic acid, which was synthesized by oxidative decarboxylation of aldosine using iron(III). This method does not require radioisotopes to label the aldol crosslink. In addition, pyridinium crosslinks such as desmosines can also be measured. * 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
