✦ Synopsis

The title compound, C 6 H 12 O 6 , has been obtained from the ethanol fraction of the aerial part of the plant Incarvillea emodi (Wall. ex Royle) Chatterjee, after recrystallization from ethanol/ethyl acetate (60:40). Each molecule is involved in 12 hydrogen bonds, as has been found in other reported inositol crystal structures.

An orthorhombic polymorph of malonamide, C 3 H 6 N 2 O 2 , is reported. The unit-cell dimensions, crystallographic symmetry and some aspects of the molecular geometry are significantly different from those of the known monoclinic form [Chieh et al. (1970). J. Chem. Soc.
