## Abstract Microglia are a major neuroglial component of the CNS, playing an important role as resident immunocompetent and phagocytic cells in the CNS in the event of injury and disease. To understand the role of microglia in the CNS in health and diseases, we have recently established an immorta

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Murine cultured microglial cells were immortalized after infection with a vβraf/vβmyc recombinant retroβvirus. This immortalized cell line (BVβ2) shares properties with body macrophages with respect to the antigen profile, their phagocytic capacity and antimicrobial activity. BVβ2 cells are not constituβtively able to kill tumor cells in vitro, but acquire antitumor activity following an increase in [Ca^++^]~i~. BVβ2 cells, like microglial cells, are however, distinct from peripheral macrophages by their expression of inwardly rectifying K^+^ cannels in concert with a Jack in outwardly rectifying K^+^ channels and the formation of spineous processes. The BVβ2 cell line thus represents a suitable model for in vitro studies of activated microglial cells.

We used the serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) method to systematically analyze transcripts present in a microglial cell line. Over 10,000 SAGE tags were sequenced, and shown to represent 6,013 unique transcripts. Among the diverse transcripts that had not been previously detected in microgli
## Abstract Much attention has been paid to the ability of glial cell lineβderived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to protect neurons from neurotoxic insults in the central nervous system (CNS). However, little is known about GDNF action on CNS glia that also can express GDNF receptor systems. In this s
