✦ Synopsis
A new design methodology for iterative learning control systems is developed. It is based on the convergence condition for systems operating on an infinite time interval which is of the H, type. The principal idea of the design technique is to design a learning controller such that the speed of convergence is maximized, with a compromise to robustness. The issue of finite versus infinite trial lengths is addressed, as well as limitations on the best achievable rate of convergence due to structural properties of the plant.

## Abstract This paper is devoted to robust iterative learning control (ILC) design for time‐delay systems (TDS) with uncertainties in both model plant and delay time. An ILC law is considered by using anticipation in time to compensate for the effects of delay, which has three design parameters: t

The main features of this approach are that no precompensator is needed, the required feedback gains are small and t
A generalized linear-quadratic optimal control problem for systems with delay admits a state feedback form solution having some desirable robustness properties, locating closed-loop poles to be a specified region and being realized by solving a finite-dimensional Riccati equation.
