Hypervalent iodine oxidation of 5-ketoacids, using [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene in dichloromethane under refluxing conditions yielded keto-y-lactones. Oxidation of 4,6-diketoacids with [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodolbenzene at room temperature afforded the corresponding diketo-&lactones.
