Dehydrogenation of methanol to methyl formate was carried out using copper-exchanged clays as catalysts. Methanol was selectively dehydrogenated to methyl formate on copper-exchanged laponite and fluoro tetrasilicic mica. In contrast, copper-exchanged montmorillonite and saponite only catalyzed the
