✦ Synopsis

Eight di †erent cultivars of apricots (Prunus armeniaca L) have been studied regarding the amygdalin content of their seeds to correlate amygdalin content with known phenotypes to determine if the inheritance of this trait is controlled in a discrete or quantitative manner. HPLC determination of amygdalin showed large di †erences between cultivars with sweet and bitter kernels. Also, some signiÐcant di †erences within groups of bitter and sweet kerneled cultivars were found but they did not correlate with the phenotypical expression of kernel Ñavour. From the results it is concluded that bitterness seems to be controlled in a discrete manner and that organoleptic evaluation that classiÐes cultivars or seedlings as bitter or sweet would be enough with no need for chemical analysis.

In broad been seeds (cultivars Comprimo RS and Threefoldwhite) harvested at four stages of maturity, which corresponded to dry matter content at the levels of I-25% , II-30% , III-35% and IV-40% , the content of amino acids was determined (g 16 g N-1). The determinations concerned raw broad bean and

This paper describes the influence of iron on both nuclear and cytosolic melatonin contents in several tissues of chicks. The neurohormone melatonin was estimated by means of radioimmunoassay. Iron, administered as FeCI3, decreased the nuclear melatonin level in a variety of tissues, including brain

Considering the numerous bene®cial effects in human health ascribed to carotenoids, studies were performed to investigate the modi®cation of carotenoid amount and composition during apricot enzymatic browning. First works on bruised apricot purees have shown a trans-b-carotene isomerisation (20%) in
