✦ Synopsis

A comparison was made of the properties of uninfected and Fujinami-virus-infected duck cells, uninfected and Muritie Sarcoma virus-infected rat cells, and uninfected and Rous Sarcoma virus-infected chicken cells. It was found that alteration in cell shape, increased glycolysis in the absence of serum, and a decreased requirement of serum for multiplication and for glycolysis were constant correlates of the neoplastic conversion brought about by these R N A sarcoma viruses, Infection of chicken embryo fibroblasts by Rous Sarcoma virus (RSV) involves the following steps: formation of the provirus (new DNA synthesis). activation of the provirus (cell division), and conversion of some properties of the infected cells (Temin , 1966a(Temin ,b, 1967a,d, 19686,d, 19686). These properties and their alterations in infected, converted cells include the following: Propivty A ltrral ion shape round or fusiform (Ternin, 1960) arriingement in packed culture more or less ordered (Temin, 1960) production of acid mucopolyactivity of hyaluronic acid increased (Ishimoto i't 01.. glycolysis in cultures in me-increased (Temin, 1968~) requirement for insulin-decreased (Temin, 1966c, increased (Temin, 1965) saccharide aynt hetase 1966) dium without serum replaceable activity in 1967r,d. 19680) serum for multiplication and glycolysis

Human and murine neuroblastoma cell lines were infected in vitro with varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Infected human neuroblastoma cells (IMR-32) supported the synthesis of abundant viral antigens as detected by indirect immunoperoxidase labeling using human serum rich in anti-VZV antibodies and did n
