β¦ Synopsis
The terminal velocities and drag coefficients of cottonseeds were measured experimentally by means of the air velocities required to suspend the particles in an air stream. The effect of lint content was examined by grouping the particles according to mass. Terminal velocities were evaluated as functions of moisture content of the seeds. The influence of vertical air flow turbulence intensity on aerodynamic properties of cottonseeds was also examined. Terminal velocities of cottonseeds depend on lint content within the range 0 to about 4%, a higher lint content of up to 14% had little effect on terminal velocity. Terminal velocity increased from 5)8 to 10)0 m/s as the mass of seeds increased from 0)08 to 0)15 g within the entire range of lint content. Cottonseed terminal velocity increased as moisture content was raised from about 6-7% to 24-26% dry basis. Terminal velocity of cottonseeds decreased, when the turbulence intensity increased from 3)8 to 14)4% The drag coefficient of cottonseed was in the range 0)6-0)9.
