✦ Synopsis


This article provides suggestions, information, and resources for advisors to use in assisting students to obtain tenure-track counselor education positions. Recommendations for research are also presented. Doctoral students who want to become counselor educators depend on their advisors and other department members to help them prepare for the professorate and to locate faculty positions. Advisors take on a variety of roles in helping students make the transition to appointed faculty members (Heiberger & Vick, 1996: Phillips, Gouran, Kuehn, &Wood, 1994). There is little counseling literature to assist students in this process: therefore, advisors have to rely on their own experience and use literature from other disciplines about academic job searches. Counselor educators base the advice they give students seeking counselor education positions on common business practices in the field because little research has been published on how institutions select candidates for these positions.
