✦ Synopsis

Recent advances in our understanding of the replicative mechanism of HBV, and the development of potent nucleoside analogues as clinically effective inhibitors of the HIV reverse transcriptase or herpesvirus polymerases has opened a new era in the treatment of chronic HBV infection. Single agent therapies, such as famciclovir, lamivudine or lobucavir, have had some success. There is now a logical basis for combination therapy, because of the clear need for prolonged treatment and the associated possibility that drug resistant strains will emerge with monotherapy, but the choice of agents to combine and the regimens in which they should be employed remain uncertain. 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

MxA protein is interferon inducible, and its role as an antiviral mediator is being studied in various viral diseases. Several cytokines, including type I interferons (␣ and ␀), interleukins 2 and 12, and granulocyte, macrophage, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factors, were tested for

Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are two major etiologic agents of chronic hepatitis, which is closely related to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The mechanism of development of chronicity after acute hepatitis B infection has not been elucidated fully. Following a single source outbreak of hepatitis B among 79 adult women, three patients (4%) became chronic carriers of hepatitis B virus (HBV). We compared features of the virus and antibody r

## Abstract ## Objective The association of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with type II mixed cryoglobulinemia is well established, but the role of HCV in B cell lymphoma remains controversial. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of circulating and liver‐infiltrating mono

The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was determined in a community-based, cross-sectional, age-stratified sample of children from 0 to 6 years of age (n = 2,299) from the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The purpose of the study was to investigate the epidemiology and the age
