## Abstract An experimental system is described in which mononuclear phagocytes are shown to cause contactβdependent resorption of bone powder in vitro. Endotoxin, which is known to stimulate macrophage functions, and which has also been shown to increase bone resorption in organ culture, increased

β¦ Synopsis
Peritoneal macrophages isolated from mannoside-methylated bovine serum albumin (MBSA)-immunized mice showed significantly enhanced phagocytosis of Mycobacterium smegmatis compared to control or MBSAimmunized groups. Immune macrophages also exhibited bacteriostatic activity against M. smegmatis. Pretreatment of mycobacteria with mannoside antibodies did not further alter the phagocytosis and bacteriostatic effect of immune macrophages.

The effect of O-(carboxymethyl)chitins (CM-chitins) on the activation of mouse-peritoneal macrophages in vivo and their mitogenic activity on mouse spleen-cells were investigated. The induction of cytotoxic macrophages is enhanced by an increase of negative charge at O-6 and decreased by further mod
Mannophosphoinositides isolated from mycobacterial cells were found to induce both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in mice when injected as mannoside-methylated bovine serum albumin (MBSA) complexes. Immunization of mice with mannoside-MBSA complexes elicited significant protection agains
Responses to adrenaline in mouse peritoneal macrophages were investigated with perforated and cellattached patch-clamp recording, and with a combination of the perforated-patch recording and fura-2 fluorescence measurements. Extracellularly applied adrenaline induced a transient outward current (4-1
The binding of the lectin concanavalin A (Con A) to the cell surface of monocytes and macrophages collected from the stimulated peritoneal cavity of mice was investigated electron microscopically with horseradish peroxidase-gold as an indirect marker. Individual cells were identified by the cytochem
