It is possible to consider calcium as of primary importance in initiating protoplasmic activity (compare Heilbrunn, '28, Heilbrunn and Daugherty, '33). The protoplasmic fluid when stimulated stiffens or clots and this clotting reaction depends in large measure on the presence of free calcium ions. B
