## Abstract The history of investigations on the contractile vacuole is reviewed briefly and brought up to date. The study of the contractile vacuole in Amoeba proteus is considered from standpoints of origin, structure, behavior, and function. The results are obtained from a prolonged study of no

## Abstract Each contractile vacuole system of Paramecium multimicronucleata is made up of a number of components, some temporary and others permanent. The contracting vacuole with its membrane is a temporary structure as are the vesicles which fuse to form it. The vacuole discharges its contents t

It is therefore concluded that the rhythmic response which is characteristic of the partially dark adapted eye originates in the optic ganglion, and the term "protocerebral rhythm" is misleading and should be abandoned. Several attempts were made to obtain the so-called "optic" rhythm from the eye-o

Numerous estimates of the pH of living cytoplasm and of its inclusion bodies have appeared in the literature of the last few years. A concise summary of the widely varied methods employed for these determinations and of the divergent results obtained has recently been made by Chambers(1). He conclud

## Abstract Contractile vacuole function in amoebae treated with immobilizing (5 mM) and nonimmobilizing (0.125 mM) concentrations of ATP has been studied. In ATP‐immobilized amoebae, most vacuolar parameters are accelerated, especially the rate of output which passes from 30 to 70 ΞΌm^3^/sec. This
