โœฆ Synopsis

It is possible to consider calcium as of primary importance in initiating protoplasmic activity (compare Heilbrunn, '28, Heilbrunn and Daugherty, '33). The protoplasmic fluid when stimulated stiffens or clots and this clotting reaction depends in large measure on the presence of free calcium ions. But if it is important for protoplasm to respond to stimulation, it is also important for it to recover. Whether or not potassium plays a part in such recovery reactions, certain it is 'This investigation was aided by a grant from thc Research Committee of the University of Pennsylvania. 207
