✦ Synopsis

Acetol can be conveniently used as a reagent for the protection of carboxylic acids in peptide synthesis. It has been found to be inert and stable to hydrogenolytic and acidolytic conditions normally used in peptide synthesis. Deblocking has been selectively achieved under mild conditions using Bu4NF.3H20 in THF.

## Abstract The preparation and properties of thirty two N(Ξ±)‐[2‐(__p__‐phenylazophenyl)‐isopropylcarbonyl]‐amino‐acids and derivatives are described. The new coloured protecting group (AZOC‐) can be easily and selectively removed with mild acid treatment, much the same as the 2‐(biphenyl)‐isopropy

A new hydroxy-protecting group for Ser, cyclohexyl, has been developed, and its application to the solid-phase peptide synthesis has been demonstrated successfully in combination with NΒ°t-Boc protection and the Merrifield resin support.
