## Abstract Chloralβ1,2β^14^C hydrate was prepared by direct chlorination of labeled acetaldehyde in an overall 47% radiochemical yield. The reaction was carried out without a catalyst by heating at one temperature in a single stage reaction. No lower chloroacetaldehydes were detected.
The subchronic toxicity of chloral hydrate, a disinfection byproduct, was studied in rats following 13 weeks of drinking water exposure. Male (262 +/- 10 g) and female (190 +/- 8 g) Sprague-Dawley rats, ten animals per group, were administered chloral hydrate via drinking water at 0.2, 2, 20 and 200
## Abstract Infraβred spectrophotometric analysis of chloral hydrate shows that this compound dissociates into water and chloral when in benzene or in carbon tetrachloride solution.
