MATERIALS AND METHODS

Carboxy-p-amino[14C]benzoic

acid was obtained from ICN and from Research Products International.

Thionyl chloride was obtained from Matheson, Coleman and Bell, adenosine was obtained from Sigma, and hexamethylphosphoramide was obtained from Aldrich. Thin-layer chromatography was carried out on Eastman 6060 silica gel plates using 2-butanone:acetone:water (65:20: 15) as the developing solvent. Ultraviolet spectra were recorded with a Cary Model 18 spectrophotometer.

Synthesis of p-chlorosulfonyl[14C)benzoic acid. This procedure is a modification of a large-scale synthesis described by Meerwein et al. (4).

A simple three-step procedure is described for the purification of a labeled peptide from a tryptic digest of the P-subunit of the F,-ATPase after the enzyme had been inactivated with p-fluorosulfonyl-[14C]benzoyl-5'-adenosine. The procedure involves: (1) anion-exchange chromatography of a tryptic

## Abstract α‐Methylstyrenes with all three side chain carbons specifically ^14^C‐labelled have been synthesised by Wittig reactions between the appropriately labelled acetophenones or methylene triphenylphosphoranes. The yields in all cases were good and any radiochemical impurities could be readi
