✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A beam pattern‐reconfigurable antenna has been designed to operate over the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. The proposed antenna is symmetric with respect to the vertical center line and has a pair of PIN diodes as switching elements near the top center of the antenna. The electrical shape of the antenna is a loop with an open wire, which flips symmetrically, depending on the switching states. The width and length of the antenna are chosen such that the gain–bandwidth product is maximized while the antenna operates over the 2.4 GHz band. The antenna is shown to have the ability of beam switching without input impedance variation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
