β¦ Synopsis
A technique is described for producing fatigue crack nucleation defects in metals using a pulsed laser. The technique is shown to be economical, versatile and particularly desirable if defects are to be put in locations not amenable to conventional machining practices. Photographs are presented to illustrate defect configurations and the types of cracks that will grow from the defects. A brief discussion of the mechanisms of accererated crack nucleation is presented.
