โœฆ Synopsis


A new (\mathrm{Mo}(\mathrm{V})) monophosphate (\mathrm{BaMo}{4} \mathrm{O}{8}\left(\mathrm{PO}{4}\right){2}), with a layer structure, has been isolated. It crystallizes in the space group (\overline{4} 2 m), with (a=7.475(1) \AA) and (c=11.156(1) \AA). The close relationships between the structure of this phase and that of the mixedvalent (\mathrm{Mo}(\mathrm{III})-\mathrm{Mo}(\mathrm{IV})) phosphate (\mathrm{Cs}{3}(\mathrm{MoO}){4}\left(\mathrm{PO}{4}\right){3}) are remarkable. Both phosphates are characterized by (\mathrm{Mo}{4} \mathrm{O}{16}) octahedral units built up from (\mathrm{Mo}{4} \mathrm{O}{4}^{6+}) cubes, forming identical (\left[\mathrm{MO}{4} \mathrm{P}{2} \mathrm{O}{16}\right]{x}) layers parallel to (001). The layer structure of the present (\mathrm{Mo}(\mathrm{V})) monophosphate derives from the intersecting tunnel framework of the intermediate valent Mo monophosphate by just suppressing the (\mathrm{PO}{4}) tetrahedra along one direction and by translating two successive (\left[\mathrm{Mo}{4} \mathrm{P}{2} \mathrm{O}{16}\right]_{\infty}) layers by ((\mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b}) / 2). 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
