## Abstract Side‐chain and ring ^14^C‐labelled styrene were synthesised from labelled benzene and acetaldehyde via bromobenzene, Grignard‐reagent and 1‐phenylethanol. Uniformly ^14^C‐labelled styrene can be also prepared using this method. By‐products were identified and the purity of products was

✦ Synopsis
A new method for the preparation of (\left[{ }^{14} \mathrm{C}\right]) trehalose was developed, based on the ability of yeast cells to accumulate trehalose under stress. The method is simple and reliable. It utilizes a yeast strain in which the gene that encodes for phosphoglucoisomerase has been deleted. Thus, exogenously supplied glucose is not metabolized, but is instead converted to trehalose. The (\left[{ }^{14} \mathrm{C}\right.) ]trehalose obtained is pure, it is hydrolyzed by trehalase, and it is not susceptible to the action of (\alpha)-glucosidase. The yield of this method is in the order of (35 %) of the (\left[{ }^{14} \mathrm{C}\right]) glucose supplied. (1993 Academic Press, Inc.
