The in-plane superlattice and the twinned domain structure were found by single crystal X-ray diffraction to be preserved after exfoliation and collapse, though the graphite planes were slightly bent. The fractional expansion due to exfoliation was comparable for single crystals and HOPG. The degree

CARBON 44. Determination of transition and micropore volume in activated carbon by adsorption of organic vapors V. A. DeBari (Sonnehorn Division, Witco Chemical, Neward, New Jersey). An analytical procedure is described for the determination of pore volumes of activated carbon in the micropore and transition-pore ranges. Adsorption measurements of organic vapors at various relative pressures are utilized to determine pore-diameter thresholds by means of the relationship between this value and the relative pressure under isothermal conditions given by the Kelvin equation. These measurements are compared with the results from the more conventional techniques of water desorption involving the McBain balance, and mercury intrusion. 45.
