The geometrical parameters for the title compound, C 16 H 13 ClOS, are normal. The dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 48.16 (5) . The non-centrosymmetric crystal packing is consistent with the substantial non-zero second harmonic generation response.

Geometric parameters of the title compound, C~16~H~14~O~2~S, a chalcone derivative, are in the usual ranges. The C=C double bond has a trans configuration. The essentially planar molecules (r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms = 0.034 Å) crystallize in planes parallel to the (\overline{1}40) plane. The molecular conformation is stabilized by an O—H...O hydrogen bond. The investigated crystal was a non-merohedral twin with a ratio of the twin components of 0.254 (1):0.746 (1).
