✦ Synopsis
Geometric parameters of the title compound, C~16~H~14~O~3~, a chalcone derivative, are in the usual ranges. The C=C double bond is trans configured. The molecule is essentially planar (r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms = 0.066 Å). The molecular conformation is stabilized by an O—H...O hydrogen bond.

The title compound, C 16 H 14 O 3 , crystallizes in the triclinic system, with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit; these are related by a non-crystallographic twofold rotation axis. The two molecules differ slightly in the relative orientation of the two aromatic rings. They are linked
Two new chalcones of general type (2E)-1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-R-phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one are reported, one where R = methyl, C 16 H 14 O 2 , in the present paper, and one where R = chloro, C 15 H 11 ClO 2 , in the following paper [Butcher, Jasinski, Narayana, Lakshmana & Yathirajan (2007).
