The title compound, C~17~H~10~N~2~O~4~, consists of two phthalimide units connected by a methylene bridge. The N—C—N bond angle is 110.64 (12)°. In the crystal structure, the dihedral angle between the two phthalimide units in one molecule is 88.96 (2)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by the π–π overlap of neighboring phthalimide units, with closest interplanar packing distances of 3.470 (1) and 3.626 (7) Å, and by weak C—H...O interactions.
