✦ Synopsis

The title compound, C 20 H 16 N 6 , consists of electron-delocalized trans-planar molecules possessing a crystallographically imposed centre of symmetry. In the crystal packing, the molecules are stacked along the c axis by van der Waals forces.

The polymeric title complex, [Zn(NO 3 ) 2 (C 24 H 20 N 8 )(H 2 O) 2 ] n , features distorted ZnN 2 O 4 octahedra with each Zn II atom being located on an inversion center. Adjacent Zn ions are doubly bridged by two equivalent 1,4-di-3-pyridyl-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene ligands to form linear chains.
