The title compound, C~7~H~3~BrNO~2~, was synthesized by the nitration of 1-bromo-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene. In the crystal structure, there are three independent molecules, one of which lies on a crystallographic mirror plane.

Methyl 4-nitrophenyl ketone was brominated by copper(II) bromide in methanol; the ketone reacts with the solvent in situ to yield the title compound, C 10 H 12 BrNO 4 , which exists as a monomeric molecule.
