Abstract
We have demonstrated the presence of β‐hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (β‐HBDH) in tissues of a variety of freshwater and marine teleosts. This enzyme was previously thought to be absent in teleost fish. β‐HBDH activity was examined in four freshwater teleosts: goldfish, Carassius auratus, northern brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus, northern pike, Esox lucius, and black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus, and three marine teleosts; alewife, Alosa pseudoharengus, smelt, Osmerus mordax, and mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus. Enzyme activity was observed in all fish examined. Highest activity was in the kidney and liver of fresh water teleosts and in the brain and liver of the marine teleosts. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
