## Abstract Homogeneous ion exchange between cations and complex anions is producing separation‐effects in an electric field. If this field is maintained across a stationary gradient of the complex forming anions focusing properties are obtained. It is shown by semiquantitative arguments that a sol

Abstract
A theoretical study of concentration‐focusing in electrophoresis is presented. The term is defined and the model of calculation discussed. Starting with a system of partial differential equations obtained by conservation of mass, several expressions are derived, including: nonstationary electrophoresis with complex‐formation; diffusion‐restricted and rate‐of‐reaction‐restricted stationary focusing. The influence of process parameters on the line‐width of a focused substance is investigated. It is possible to account for the observed effects caused by the electric field‐strength, the gradient of the complex forming agent, the diffusion, and the rate of reaction. Separation by focusing as compared with ordinary electromigration is characterized by short duration and insensitivity towards perturbations.
