✦ Synopsis
The oxydative coupling of lithium aryls by CuCl, has been investigated with the isomer lithium toluenes as model compounds.
The synthesis of 4,4'-dilithium-3,3'-dimethylbiphenyl and 11,44-dilithium-12,23,32,43tetramethyl-p-quaterphenyl is described.
The oxydative polyreaction of these dilithium compounds with aid of CuCl, was investigated in several solvents. Main reaction products are the expected compounds with 8-12 p-connected rings. A small amount is composed of substances which contain more than 16 p-connected benzene moieties per molecde.
From the reaction mixture la,23,32,43,52,63,72,83,92,103,1 12,123-dodekamethyl-p-du~deciphenyl could be isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography in a high purity.
The synthesis of 18,23,32,43,52,6a,7z,83-oktamethyl-p-octiphenyl succeeded starting with l~-lithi~m-l~,2~,3~,4~-tetramethyl-p-quaterpheny~ and CuCI,.
