No mention of the possible toxicity caused by autoxidised surfactants is found although a large amount of work has been carried out on the toxicity of fats, oils and fatty acids. It has been shown here from Fig. 1 that Arlacel A, a surfactant used in the formulation of water in oil emulsions is readily autoxidisable and that the autoxidation products are toxic.
T h e autoxidation of the oleate moiety of the molecule may be enhanced by the carbohydrate moiety in the molecule of the compound which probably acts as a chelating agent for metals. It has been also shown, that the autoxidised Arlacel A is toxic and that it is possible to purify it by passing through a column of alumina.
Furthermore, it was found that the purified dianhydro mannitol mono-oleate is not toxic and it is comparable to normal saline in its action. The alumina adsorbate, though probably differing in some way from the autoxidised product, is toxic to a greater extent than the autoxidised Arlacel A. Its quantity, however, was not sufficient for both toxicity and identification purposes and it was found preferable to prove at first its toxic action.
