✦ Synopsis
In the present work are presented the results of PZC measurements of mercury electrode in the mixtures of formamide and N-methylformamide with ethylene glycol. The method of defining the liquid junction potential of pure solvents, based on PZC measurements in the mixtures are discussed. Using the extrapolating method elaborated by Jakuszewski, are calculated the shift of scale standard potential of hydrogen electrode, surface dipole potenlial effects on the mercury and liquid Junction potential of the mixtures of ethylene glycol with formamide and N-methylformamide. The new way of calcukting the potential effects of other mixtures is proposed.

The Chernoff and Kavlock in vivo assay was used to study the teratogenic potential of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME). It was administered to pregnant rats on days 6-17 (inclusive) of gestation by the dermal route at an application rate of 10 ml kg-' body weight of 3%, lo%, 30% and 100% EGME

## Abstract In Brazil, environmental contamination by mercury occurs mainly as a result of gold mining activities, especially in the Amazon region. In this area, human contamination results mainly from consumption of fish. Treatment of current symptoms of acute or chronic mercury contamination is n
