โœฆ Synopsis

The title compound, Y 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ร8H 2 O, consists of inยฎnite layers parallel to (101), with [Y(H 2 O) 4 (SO 4 ) 3/2 ] as the unique repeat unit. The layers are linked only by hydrogen bonds of medium strength. The trivalent yttrium cation is coordinated by eight O atoms from four sulfate groups and four water molecules, in the form of a distorted square antiprism [YO 8 ]. The title compound is isostructural with the well known members of the rare-earth sulfate octahydrate structure type.

Colourless single crystals of Na 3 YCl 6 , crystallizing in the cryolite structure type and isotypic with Na 3 GdCl 6 -II and Na 3 MCl 6 (M = Sc, DyยฑLu), were prepared from a ยฏux of YCl 3 , NaCN and NaN 3 ; the trivalent yttrium is octahedrally coordinated by chlorine atoms with an average YรCl dist
