## Abstract Novel ether‐type chitin derivatives were synthesized by reacting alkali salts of chitin with 1‐chloropropane, propylene oxide and 3‐chloro‐1,2‐propanediol to prepare propylchitin (PPC), hydroxypropylchitin (HPC) and dihydroxypropylchitin (DHPC), respectively. The structures of these chi

✦ Synopsis
The -2,3-bis(benzyl ether) of xylan, a natural polysaccharide, has been prepared by using a new benzylation method. This method was first tested on methylb-D-xylopyranoside, the monomer model of xylan. It implies the use of potassium hydroxyde, a crown ether as a catalyst, and benzyl bromide as a benzylating agent. Perbenzylated xylan is obtained with a good yield (80%) in a one-step reaction. It is soluble in most organic solvents. The 13 C-and 1 H-NMR spectra of this polymer were assigned and are typical of a regular linear polymer. Differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry indicate the temperature range at which this polymer can be processed at high temperature.

The objective of this study is to see if random alkyl ethers of various sulfoalkyl ether cyclodextrins can be synthesized and characterized. The purpose of the alkylation was to test the hypothesis that an increase in the ''height'' of a cyclodextrins cavity would help in the binding/complexation of
