✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Novel ether‐type chitin derivatives were synthesized by reacting alkali salts of chitin with 1‐chloropropane, propylene oxide and 3‐chloro‐1,2‐propanediol to prepare propylchitin (PPC), hydroxypropylchitin (HPC) and dihydroxypropylchitin (DHPC), respectively. The structures of these chitin derivatives were confirmed by FT‐IR and solid state CP/MAS ^13^C NMR spectrometry. The substituents are introduced primarily at the C^6^ position of the glucosamine unit in chitin, with a degree of substitution of approx. 30–50%. The three chitin derivatives are soluble in weakly acidic aqueous solutions, DHPC even in pure water.

The -2,3-bis(benzyl ether) of xylan, a natural polysaccharide, has been prepared by using a new benzylation method. This method was first tested on methylb-D-xylopyranoside, the monomer model of xylan. It implies the use of potassium hydroxyde, a crown ether as a catalyst, and benzyl bromide as a be

Diethylaminoethyl-chitin (DEAE-chitin) was synthesized by introducing DEAE groups onto the C(6)-OH in chitin. DEAE-chitin was N-deacetylated by heating in aqueous 10% sodium hydroxide containing sodium borohydride to prepare the diethylaminoethyl-chitosan (DEAE-chitosan). In addition, DEAE-chitin wa

The objective of this study is to see if random alkyl ethers of various sulfoalkyl ether cyclodextrins can be synthesized and characterized. The purpose of the alkylation was to test the hypothesis that an increase in the ''height'' of a cyclodextrins cavity would help in the binding/complexation of

Free amino groups in @-chitin from squid pen were acetylated to obtain N-acetylated Pchitin. After careful control of degree of acetylation, thermal and mechanical properties of P-chitin and N-acetylated @-chitin were compared. The structural differences of P-chitin and N-acetylated 6-chitin were ch
