✦ Synopsis

Thin oxide films formed on aluminium in dtifcrent nitrate solutions have been examined by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It has been shown that the adsorption of nitrate ions on the oxidized surface of aiuminium is followed by their reduction inside the oxide film. The mechanism of this reduction process is discussed on the basis of the XPS data.
