✦ Synopsis

Withametelin, a novel hexacyclic withanolide of Datura mete1 leaves has been characterized as 1 on the basis of spectroscopic studies.

Datura is one of the few genera in the family Solanaceae that are known to elaborate C28-steroidal lactones, built on ergostane-framework. While reports on the isolation of withanolides from several Datura species are on record, ' no withanolide has yet been isolated from Datura mete1 Linn& and, therefore, --this species was taken up for chemical investigation.

## Abstract Three new withanolide compounds named baimantuoluoline A (**1**), B (**2**), and C (**3**) and the two known withanolides withafastuosin E (**4**) and withametelin C (**5**) were isolated from the fraction exhibiting activity for psoriasis in the flower of __Datura metel__ L. The three
