The size o f the motor industry is enormous, a n d in Western Europe alone is estim a t e d to g r o w to almost $9.5 billion by 2001. While this article is not an attempt to profile all the m a i n m o t o r manufacturers worldwide, it does a i m to p r o v i d e a short guide to s o m e o f the b r a n d n a m e s which users will most c o m m o n l y f i n d attached to the motors behind their p u m p i n g systems. News of each company's m o s t current innovation is also included.

A B B e n z l e r s AB Benzlers is a leading manufacturer of mechanical transmission products in Scandinavia. Set up in 1944, it is n o w part of the Atle Karolin Group, and reports a turnover of around SEK 480 million. Areas of operation include p o w e r transmission equipment, torque arm speed reducers, helical gear motors, screw jacks, h o l l o w shaft geared motors, heavy-duty industrial gears, and w o r m gear units. AB Benzlers has recently i n t r o d u c e d the Salamotor -a gear and m o t o r in a c o m p a c t drive unit.

The unit offers easier mounting, higher reliability and eliminates p r o b l e m s w i t h additional e q u i p m e n t . Mounting time and life cycle cost is reduced, while handling and installation is eased.

N e w -G e a r e d m o t o r s f o r r e d u c e d e n e r g y c o n s u m p t i o n

Energy savings of 40% to 60% can be achieved by the company's n e w range of geared motors with integrated frequency inverters for a wide range of industrial applications. These units, w h e n used for driving p u m p s or fans, can reduce mean noise levels by 50% or more, due to the design of helical gears and better balance b e t w e e n load demand and p o w e r supply in the application. With p o w e r ratings from 0.75 to 7.5 kW and torque ratings up 10 000 Nm, the n e w units are suitable for a w i d e variety of industrial uses, including p u m p applications handling water, pulp, sewage, solvents and many o t h e r liquids, and for driving such e q u i p m e n t as elevators, cranes and conveyors, w h e r e both speed and p o w e r must bc smoothly controlled.

The units are d e s i g n e d to o p e r a t e in a m b i e n t t e m p e r a t u r e s from -25 °C to 40 °C, t o g e t h e r w i t h approximately 200% overload capacity and 1:8 speed range (expendable to 1:25).
